Royal Melbourne Hotel is a pub on Bourke St just off King St in the West of Melbourne's CBD. Having been built in 1887-1889 as a police station, Royal Melbourne Hotel still has some old relics in use. Most notably, the old cell blocks between the courtyard area and the toilet area, the strange wooden doors and the old castle-like stones that make up the courtyard walls. In addition to the famous courtyard, is an upstairs room and private room at the front of the venue. Royal Melbourne Hotel is often referred to as Bourke St Courtyard when the venue operates as a nightclub and event space. Sometimes on a Friday, there are events at Royal Melbourne Hotel/Bourke St Courtyard but they are few and far between. On a Saturday, Bourke St Courtyard hosts CODE Saturdays, which is a massive event. Run by the same team that does Flamingo Club, Panda Thursdays and Uphoria Saturdays, CODE has been a staple event of Melbourne's nightlife scene. Sundays are usually reserved for day parties and are hosted by large scale promoters Novel and Thick as Thieves among others. The day parties host a range of internationals and regarded local DJs.
