Yah Yahs

99 Smith St, Fitzroy VIC 3065, Australia

‍Yah Yah's is one of the most popular venues in Melbourne, particularly in Fitzroy. Having opened in 2008 as a live music venue, Yah Yah's still embraces it's indie heritage. 2003-2011 was the peak of indie culture with the likes of the Arctic Monkeys first few albums, The kooks and The Stokes. Musically, indie rock culture was a response to 1990s, apathetic grunge era, while still having some remnants of early rock and garage. This history of indie culture is embedded throughout all aspects of the venue, in terms of the aesthetic, DJ song selection, live music and crowd. ‍ The owner's of Cherry Bar bought Yah Yah's in 2014 and vowed to continue the ethos of indie rock culture of the venue. ‍ ‍

The Space

Yah Yah's in Fitzroy has two and a half levels. The ground floor level has a stage with a DJ podium and a dance floor area on one side, then on the other side is a collection of red velvet booths. The Dance Floor extends throughout the ground level and onto the stage. This is arguably the best differentiator of Yah Yah's to most other venues, the ability to dance up on stage near the DJ and out to the rest of the crowd is incredibly fun. ‍ Go upstairs, you'll find an iconic intermediary level. This half level is scattered with half broken vintage couches, that sink very very deep. This is functions as a hook up and DnM area. The actual upstairs level has another stage area and a bar.

The Entertainment

The music centers around indie rock and pop from the late 1990s to 2020s. Expect to hear some The Fratelli's 2006 'Chelsea Dagger', Red Hot Chilli Peppers and Arctic Monkeys, but also Miley Cyrus, Dua Lipa and Kyle Mingone.

The Crowd

On Fridays and Saturdays, the crowd is pretty mixed but is predominantly 18-26 years old. The crowd is also pretty fashionable and trendy. ‍ On Thursdays, is a Gay event promoter 'Thursgay'. The entertainment on a thursday involves drag shows, DJs and lip syncing competitions. The crowd is very welcoming to LGBTQI+ individuals and people who respect LGBTQI+ culture.
